Top 3 winter getaways

Hello faithful readers & followers of the Player Highlife movement! Today, I wanted to cover winter getaways. There's nothing like you and your special someone getting in your car and just taking a road trip to some place that's off the beaten path, putting on some hot chocolate, turning up the fireplace, and just kicking back & relaxing! Everyone should, at one time or another, make an effort to go off on a winter excursion (even if you have to scrimp & save) because it is truly one of the most wonderful experience that you can ever have. The ambience, the environment, the people & the potential stories you can both hear and create are well worth the $. Simply, it's creating memories for a lifetime...

I'm going to cover 3 particular spots that are very lovely: The Pitcher Inn in Warren, Vermont; The Akwaaba Mansion in Brooklyn; and Black Bear Inn in Lake Tahoe, California. Let's get started!

The Pitcher Inn (Warren, Vermont)

Out of all of the places in the United States that are beautiful during the winter, nothing can quite compare to the Northeast. New England happens to have a certain type of charm. The Pitcher Inn happens to epitomize that charm. Built in the 1850's, it originally started as a small country inn that catered to weary travelers that crossed over the mountains. Over the years, it has expanded into a Relais & Chateau. Located in the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains, it is the perfect vacation spot for someone who is in New England for a winter vacation.
The Pitcher Inn has a total of eleven rooms and suites, of which nine are unique double-occupancy rooms located in the main house and two are two bedroom suites, situated in the barn which is adjacent to the main house. Excluding extra beds, it can accommodate 13 couples or 26 people. For exclusive use and house party events, with extra beds and pull out sofa beds, this number can be increased to 33 guests. Each room was designed and decorated to be distinctly different but with a common Vermont theme. Appointed with original art, memorabilia and antiques, the guest rooms provide a comfortable and subtly luxurious atmosphere. All rooms feature individual air-climate controls, three line telephones with DSL data port and Wi-Fi access, CD music player and concealed television with VHS player. In addition, all private baths have Jacuzzi tubs and radiant floor heating. Some rooms also offer steam showers and the majority have wood burning fireplaces and king beds.

The two suites are known as "Stable" and "Hayloft". These are located in a barn next to the main house and are ideal for the traveling family or two couples. Stable is a two-bedroom suite, located on the lower level of the barn. The master bedroom has a king size bed, while the second bedroom has two twin beds with each bedroom having private ensuite bathrooms. There is a living room with a comfortable seating area and a view of the garden. True to its name, Stable is decorated with bridles, saddles and equipment that usually can be found in a stable. Decorated with antique barn supplies, Hayloft is located up-stairs, on the second level of the barn and features two identically sized king bedrooms with a common living room separating them.

The Pitcher Inn aims to provide guests with ample opportunity and variety to enjoy the pleasures of the table. As a member of Vermont Fresh Network, the Inn is committed to using the freshest local and regional ingredients which allows the Executive Chef, Sue Schickler, to change the menus seasonally as well as introducing special dishes based on that day's market's bounty. Vermont raised lamb, quail and rabbit, organic heirloom tomatoes, local free range eggs, artisanal cheeses and seafood from the country's finest purveyors provide the culinary team with ample materials to create superlative meals. In addition, all breakfast goods are baked daily on the premises as well as delectables for afternoon tea, served in the Library.

The Main Dining Room has an à la carte dinner menu emphasizing quality ingredients and culinary mastery, drawing inspiration beyond Vermont from France, Italy and the Pacific Rim. Tracks, our lounge, offers a small plate dinner menu and cocktails, ideal for something a little more casual whilst perhaps playing a game of pool or shuffle board in the Maple Room or just enjoying the warmth of an open fire. For Private Dining, it offers a Wine Cellar for tasting menus up to six people or the Brook Room for larger parties up to 30.

Dinner reservations for the Dining Room and the Wine Cellar are recommended prior to your arrival; The Pitcher Inn prefers that you call upon confirmation of your reservation your preferred time as well as any special dietary requirements. The Dining Room, Tracks and the Wine Cellar are closed on Tuesday evenings but they are more than likely to assist with local recommendations.

Breakfast is served from 8:00am to 10:00am in the Main Dining Room or on the verandah (weather permitting);
Coffee, tea and muffins for those early risers from 7:00am in the Continental Breakfast Nook;
Afternoon Tea for resident guests is served in the Library or in Tracks from 4:00pm to 6:00pm;
Tracks is open for cocktails from 4.30pm and for light fare from 6:00pm;
Lunch or gourmet picnics are available across the street at The Warren Store;
Room service is available during kitchen hours but please note that an automatic 20% surcharge will be added;
The Pitcher Inn boasts an award winning Wine List, recently honored with the "Best of Award of Excellence" by Wine Spectator with nearly 600 bins from the world's most celebrated wineries, offering eclectic finds as well as classic vintages. Of these, nearly 30 are available by the glass or you may chose from a superlative selection of Champagnes and Sparkling Wines. Akwaaba Mansion (Brooklyn, New York)

Moving on, The Akwaaba Mansion in the New York City borough of Brooklyn is the perfect getaway for city dwellers. Built in the 1860's the meticulously restored Italianate villa features exquisite architectural details, including 14-foot ceilings and ornate fireplaces, while the décor is a blend of antiques and Afrocentric elegance. Located in historic Stuyvesant Heights, Akwaaba Mansion is nestled in a quiet tree-lined community with some of the city's finest brownstones. The historic neighborhood is rich in culture, and the excitement of Manhattan is only 20 minutes away by subway or car. Each room comes with a full breakfast.
Owned and operated by husband and wife team Glenn Pogue and Monique Greenwood, Monique and Glenn fell in love with the idea of inns when they stayed at their first bed and breakfast back in the early '90s. As guests, they enjoyed the hominess and comfort of the bed and breakfast experience. Monique quickly discovered that innkeeping combined all of her personal passions – architecture and interior decorating, entertaining and meeting new people, and helping others create wonderful, lasting memories.
Monique and Glenn are the fifth owners of the Italianate structure, which features original details, such as 14-foot ceilings, ornate fireplaces, intricate parquet wood floors and gaslight fixtures, along with modern conveniences, such as a private baths in each guestroom with oversized Jacuzzi tubs. The original owners from 1860 were wealthy beer barrens. Monique and Glenn purchased the home from the Lilly family, a working-class African-American family who lived there for over 50 years after the parents and their eight young adult children pooled their money together to buy it as the family home.

Monique and Glenn completed extensive restoration of the property, including wood stripping and sanding, painstaking interior and exterior painting, all new mechanicals, four new bathrooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen and a huge paved courtyard where they've had dinners for more than 100 guests. The entire process was documented by the popular HGTV series "Restore America."

Hottest Christmas Ideas for 2010

Hottest Christmas Ideas for 2010

With only a few days left until Christmas, there are still plenty of people out there who haven't as of yet bought Christmas present for the loved ones in their lives. They tend to be like many of us and wait until the very last minute to buy something special. Even I have at one time fell victim to this phenomenom (haha!).
But with many online stores such as Amazon, Borders, Wal-Mart, Barnes and Noble, Target, and others, it has made shopping for the perfect gift exponentally easier! It also comes in handy when you particularly don't want to drive in inclimate weather (as in many parts of the country right now) just to find out that the particular item that you want is sold out. Another plus to shopping online is that you can have items delivered to your door before your spouse and/or kids open up their presents on Christmas morning (not unless your kids are really sneaky and can move through the house undetected like a Navy SEAL, lol).
So, here are some of the hottest items that are for sale at numerous online stores. Maybe it will give you some ideas as far as what you might want to buy:

1) Amazon Kindle 3G wireless reading device
The Amazon Kindle is an e-reader device that has become Amazon's best-selling and most wish listed item in the past 2 years. It also has the most 5-star requests out of all of the other item that are sold on the e-merchant. The Kindle offers these features:

20% Faster Page Turns – Seamless reading
Enhanced PDF Reader – With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights
New WebKit-Based Browser – Free 3G web browsing (experimental)

The Kindle also can be bought with an extended 2-year warranty and comes with different colors of covers. The Kindle has a longer battery life (1 month) when compared to other medium of e-book readers, that only have a few hours (laptop, smartphone, tablet). The device uses an electronic ink (as compared to an LCD display) that makes text clearer and causes the reader not to strain their own eyes. It also offers less glare than LCD screens. You could honestly read before going to bed without any trouble. The Kindle Store offers over 775,000 books, magazines, blogs, and newspapers. Over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books are also available to read on Kindle, including titles such as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, and Treasure Island
At 8.7 ounces, this is the perfect gift for the reader in your life.

3) Apple iPod touch
The #1 mp3 player in the world, the Apple iPod touch offers memory in 8GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB.

See friends while you talk to them with FaceTime. Shoot, edit, and share stunning HD video. Play games against friends, or unknown foes, with the new Game Center. And do it all on the Retina display--the highest-resolution screen on any mobile device. It makes graphics and text look even more amazing. The new iPod touch. It's state-of-the-art fun.
Advanced engineering at play.
Pioneering technology built into iPod touch is how you're able to flick, tap, and pinch. It's what makes a racing game feel so real. It's why you're able to see a friend crack up at your jokes from across the globe. And it's the reason iPod touch is the most incredible iPod you'll ever own.
Looks can be amazing.
iPod touch has an all-new design that makes it the thinnest, lightest, most amazing iPod touch ever. Holding one is all the proof you need. With its curved design, iPod touch is now a mere 7.2 millimeters thin. Its engineered-glass front and stainless steel back feel sleek and smooth in your hand. Turn it on, and you're instantly blown away by the brilliant Retina display. iPod touch is the perfect combination of stunning design and revolutionary technology--brilliant from the outside in.
Retina display. A blast from the future.
There are lots of reasons you won't want to take your eyes off the new iPod touch. The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display, for one. It packs 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution iPod screen ever. To achieve this, Apple engineers developed pixels so small--a mere 78 micrometers across--that the human eye can't distinguish individual pixels. Even though you can't see them, you'll definitely notice the difference. Text is remarkably sharp, and graphics are incredibly vivid.
Apple A4 processor. More power to you.
The Apple A4 chip is behind, or rather underneath, all the fun you can have on iPod touch. Apple engineers designed the A4 chip to be a remarkably powerful yet remarkably power-efficient mobile processor. With it, iPod touch can easily perform complex jobs such as multitasking, editing video, and placing FaceTime calls. All while maximizing battery life. And fun.
Gyro + Accelerometer. Smooth moves.
iPod touch just learned some new moves. It now includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope. When paired with the accelerometer, the gyro makes iPod touch capable of advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, full 3D attitude, and rotation rate. Translation: more motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience.
Two cameras. Double the fun.
iPod touch captures video with two built-in cameras. It shoots amazing HD 720p video from the back camera. And with its advanced backside illumination sensor, it captures beautiful footage even in low-light settings. All while the built-in microphone records conversations, music, or any audio at the same time. And on the front of the iPod touch, the built-in camera is perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits. It's surprising how much fun can fit into something so small.
Multi-Touch. Control at your fingertips.
When you put your finger on the iPod touch, how does it just start doing what you want it to do? It's a chain reaction, really. The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the Retina display below it. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely.

4) LG 42LD450 42-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV
A great way to get into high-definition entertainment, the affordable 42-inch LG 42LD450 LCD HDTV offers 1080p Full HD resolution for crystal-clear detail, multiple AV Modes to optimize the picture depending on what you're watching (Cinema, Sports, or Games), and an amazing 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for more stunning colors and deeper blacks. Other features include a 4ms (millisecond) response time, capability to play MP3 audio files and JPEG photo slideshows from a USB drive, stereo speakers with 20 watts of power and Dolby Digital decoding, and three HDMI inputs. A perfect edition to any gaming system, home theater system, or for the upcoming NCAA bowl games and the Super Bowl!

5) gift cards
Finally, if you want to just go the quick and easy route, a gift card is always something that you can swing. Most gift cards can be bought in different denominations and you don't have to worry about whether the person doesn't like the gift or not, because they can buy whatever it is that they really want. Places such as Walmart, Sears, Target, Amazon, JC Penney, and other stores offer gift cards. Even your favorite restaurants such as Applebee's, Olive Garden, Max & Erma's, and others offer gift cards & certificates.

Even for the music lover in your life, you can get gift cards for places such as iTunes, and Rhapsody.

And that's about it on different items that are hot for this Christmas. I hope that I provided you with some good ideas. Let me close with a quote from Pablo Picasso:

"Action is the foundational key to all success."

Have a safe & merry Christmas!!! Live well, it's the best revenge...

Welcome to Player Highlife!!!

Welcome to Player Highlife, a blog about living and experiencing the good life. My name is Robert and I will be your guide on this adventure. I wanted to start about a blog about the highlife because ever since I was young, I have had a fascination with living well. I've always had an inclination toward sophistication and experiencing life fully.

I can remember watching shows such as "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" and "Livin' Large" and wishing that I could achieve the same level of success as those celebrities and power player that I saw on those very same show. So, in my quest to achieve my dreams, I got heavily into self-help and personal development. I was willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Just recently, I decided to write a blog about one of my life's passions: living the highlife. I know that there are a lot of like-minded people out there that share these same ambitions, whether they are they making moves or aspire to great things. I am here to tell you: IT IS REACHABLE!!!

My hope for this blog is that it becomes the #1 blog on the internet about highlife, nightlife, and living well. Hopefully, I can start a community of like-minded, positive people who can chat, network, and make new friends. I want to be able to tell people about some of the places and things that we all should get a chance to experience in order to have a full experience as far as our lives. I will cover aspects of:
  • travel
  • nightlife
  • fine dining
  • fashion
  • fine automobiles
  • parties & events
  • entertainment & fine arts
Also, I will close every blog with a bit of positive advice (for those people who believe it impossible or even hard to achieve this lifestyle) to help you in your daily lives. Any successful person who ever wants to achieve anything has to have a positive frame of mind, goals, and take massive action. Always, believe that you CAN & WILL achieve your dreams if you want them badly enough.

If you ever want to send any comments, questions, or just wanna network & be friends, you can email me at playerhighlife@gmail.com or find me on Twitter (@playerhighlife).

I'll close this entry by quoting the great Napoleon Hill, the author of "The Law of Success" and "Think and Grow Rich":

"Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve."
I hope that you enjoy this blog. So, live well. It's the best revenge...
Take care,
Robert
